Kuwait’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Mansour Al-Otaibi delivering a speech at the UNSC
meeting. NEW YORK, Feb 27, (KUNA): Kuwait said on Wednesday it shared the international community’s concerns over the humanitarian situation in Venezuela, which caused the displacement of thousands of people to neighboring countries.
This came in Kuwait’s speech before UNSC meeting to discuss situation in Venezuela delivered by Kuwait’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Mansour Al-Otaibi.
Ambassador Al-Otaibi expressed appreciation of Latin American and Caribbean countries for hosting such large numbers of displaced people, calling all parties concerned to take the necessary measures to ensure that humanitarian assistance reaches those in need.
“We followed latest developments in Venezuela over the past few days that have resulted in the deaths of a number of victims and we stress the importance of holding accountable those responsible for these unfortunate events”.
It is important to respect freedom of expression and peaceful demonstration guaranteed by international law, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
He explained that this crisis in Venezuela requires all relevant actors to give priority to the national interest on personal or party interests, and to commit to a comprehensive political dialogue to address the current crisis.
Ambassador Al-Otaibi urged all parties to exercise restraint, reduce tension, renounce violence and make every effort to prevent further violence, and express their support for any effort by the SecretaryGeneral of the United Nations to reach a political solution to stabilize the situation in Venezuela as soon as possible.
Meanwhie, in another unrelated development, the United Nations Correspondents Association (UNCA) chose Wednesday a photo depicting Kuwait’s generous donation to the Syrian humanitarian cause as an important media event for the UN’s European headquarters in the last 70 years.
Speaking to KUNA on the event, Kuwaiti permanent representative to the UN and international organizations headquarters in Geneva Ambassador Jamal Al-Ghunaim said that the photo displayed the moment when Kuwait, in 2014, donated a sum of $ 200 million to the humanitarian cause in the wartorn country of Syria.
The photo, which has advisor of the Amiri Diwan Abdullah Al-Matouq, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and other prominent figures, reaffirms Kuwait’s commitment towards helping the people suffering from conflicts and wars, said Ambassador Al-Ghunaim.
He added that the UN highly appreciated Kuwait’s generous stance, revealing that major news outlets had covered the event of the Kuwaiti donation.
Meanwhile, Ambassador Al-Ghunaim said a gallery depicting important international events had photos related to Kuwait included one of the former UN Secretary General Javier Perez de Cuellar prior to his visit to Baghdad in January 1991 in effort to end the 1990 Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. The gallery also had a photo of former US Foreign Secretary James Baker in Iraqi also within the efforts to end the occupation. The gallery continues until February 28.
